Krohn Vintage Port 2017
About the Krohn 2017 Vintage Port:
Krohn's 2017 Vintage Port is perhaps the best Vintage of the 21st century. Made in a year with perfect weather conditions that ensured a near-perfect harvest. This 2017 Vintage Port from Krohn is fit to keep for nearly 50(!) more years and will only become more flavorful over time.
What is a Vintage Port?
A Vintage Port is a port made from grapes harvested in the same year. The grapes used are often of the highest quality available. The port matures for about 2 to 3 years in wooden barrels and is then bottled. To be allowed to make a Vintage, the port must be judged by an independent panel (often working for the municipality in Porto). After the port is approved, it may only be called vintage.
How long can I keep a Vintage Port?
Due to the high quality and minimal contact with oxygen, vintages can be kept for around 50 years. This ageing is called maturation, in this case in bottle. This ageing makes the port taste a lot fuller and richer.
About the Krohn port house:
In 1865, the Krohn porthouse was founded by Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn, two Norwegians with especially extensive knowledge of carrying Port. On the bottles today, you can still find the text 'Port Shippers Since 1865', because in the first few decades the company did not produce port but only transported. Over the decades, the port house started to specialise in making port and, besides beautiful Vintages, they also produce very nice Colheitas and Lagrimas.
